This winter scene depicts the traditional way of life of the Gwich’in people hunting, trapping, and fishing which to this day remain significant elements of the Gwich’in economy and way of life. Caribou are of particular importance to the Gwich’in. The Gwich’in creation story teaches that people andcaribou were created together and that each holds a piece of the others heart in their own.
Therefore they are spiritually, mentally and physically connected, respecting and taking careof each other. The caribou provides food and clothing for the people who take only what they need and protect the caribou’s environment.
